The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) will meet June 11-13 in Lakeland at the Hilton Garden Inn, 3839 Don Emerson Drive. The meeting is open to the public, and all interested individuals may speak within the guidelines established by the Commission.

The June 11 workshop starts at 1 p.m. with the consideration of 11 consent agenda items, among which include eliminating the requirement for a recreational fishing license when targeting the nonnative, invasive lionfish with certain gear, and not imposing recreational or commercial limits on harvesting.

After that, Director Nick Wiley will present his Executive Director’s Report. Next, Commissioners and staff will review and discuss the agency’s budget-development process.

Refuge welcomes boosts in summer staffing

With federal budgets currently freezing refuge hiring, J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is happy to welcome two temporary staffers made available through government programs.

Intern Amber Walden joined the refuge staff on May 20, 2013, as part of the Career Development Intern Program (CDIP), a partnership between the U. S. Fish & Wildlife Service and Student Conservation Association.

Walden began her orientation at the Refuge along with 26 other students in the program. Originally from Tallahassee, Florida, she now studies history with a minor in Russian at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission (FWC) fishery biologists were
heartbroken to see the white bellies of
numerous fish floating in Lake Victor.
Lake Victor is a popular, 130-acre FWC-
managed impoundment in Holmes County.
Since the impoundment was constructed, the FWC has stocked fish, managed vegetation, provided boating access, created fish attractors and spawning beds and otherwise strove to create quality fishing.

Foundation will direct $356 million from oil spill criminal cases to Florida for natural resource projects

Natural resource projects in Florida will receive $356 million from plea agreements in criminal cases involving the 2010 Gulf oil spill.

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation announced the establishment of the Gulf Environmental Benefit Fund and allocations Monday to five Gulf states. The foundation, created by Congress and overseen by federal agencies, will administer and monitor $2.5 billion provided by plea agreements.

Butterflies in decline in South Florida?

By their nature, South Florida’s tropical butterflies have always been ephemeral creatures, coming and going with the rhythms of the life cycle and season. Now they’re just gone.

In what may be an unprecedented die-off, at least five varieties of rare butterflies have vanished from the pine forests and seaside jungles of the Florida Keys and southern Miami-Dade County, the only places some were known to exist.

Volunteers Needed for Oyster Shell Project

Thursday-Saturday, April 11-13, 9 am to noon each day

This weekend Tampa Bay Watch is in need of hard-working volunteers to help install oyster shell bars at Schultz Nature Preserve in Riverview.The project will involve shoveling fossilized shell into mesh bags, transporting the bags via boat and placing them on the shoreline to create a series of oyster bars. Volunteers with 17'-23' shallow draft boats are also needed to transport the bags from Williams Park Boat Ramp to the shoreline of Schultz Nature Preserve.
